Sule Jimoh, a 22-year-old man, has drowned in the Lagoon River on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, after a picnic outing with his friends on Sunday, 3 August.

His friends and witnesses of the incident, Seun Atoyede, Habeeb Balogun and Adewale Adigun, initially attempted to run away from the scene of the drowning, but were stopped and caught by residents of the area, who immediately alerted the police.

Policemen attached to the Yaba Police Division, would subsequently arrest the three boys.

A family member who went to the scene of the incident could not find any trace of Jimoh, only managing to recover his shirt and trouser, which were said to have been picked from the bank of the Lagoon.

However, a female member of the family who spoke to Punch, said the police must thoroughly interrogate the victim’s friends to know what really happened.

She said, “The boy was a very devout Muslim and very committed. He had only finished from the mosque that day when his friends came and said he should follow him out to Rowe Park. Initially, he didn’t want to follow them, but he yielded, after they pressed him to go with them.”

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Lelma Kolle, confirmed the incident and also the arrest of the three suspects.

He said, “The three friends have been arrested and are with the police. Nobody can tell exactly what happened to the boy, because we have not even seen his corpse. But the report is that he drowned in the river.”
