‘Prayers and birthday’ | Why Fayose didn’t attend PDP rebranding conference

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held a national conference in Abuja on Thursday, November 12 and it was attended by the party stalwarts.

Missing in action at the conference was Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, who has been very vocal and in the news for different reasons.

The governor blamed his absence at the conference, on his preparation for his forthcoming birthday.

Fayose turns 55 on Sunday, November 15 and has scheduled events to celebrate his birthday.

Gov. Fayose, who spoke in Afao Ekiti, said his absence should not be misinterpreted and also that he was in good terms with the National Working Committee led by Uche Secondus.

He reiterated his support for the NWC in its efforts to reposition the party and bring it back to its glory days that made them loved by Nigerians.

“I am observing prayers here in Afao Ekiti. This weekend is my 55th birthday. I have been receiving several guests and I have a lot of people to meet and preparations to make.”

“So, whatever the PDP leaders do at that level, I support them. I think the party even acknowledged the fact that there were things I have done here that had been of tremendous benefits to the party. So, my presence there to me means nothing. That is the way I feel.”

He continues “To me, my presence in Abuja is inconsequential. What I place high premium on is ensuring that I make the party very popular and acceptable in my base here in Ekiti, so that the PDP can continue to win elections here,” Fayose said.

“I will continue to do what I deem necessary to help the party to grow. I will always ensure that the PDP is on ground here in Ekiti.”

Gov. Fayose sees himself as a loyal and consistent politician who does not shamefully turn-coat when the going gets tough.

He took a jab at some politicians who shamefully defected to the All People’s Congress briefly after Goodluck Ebele Jonathan lost the April presidential elections.

He said: “It pains me when those that had benefited from the PDP for 16 years shamefully joined the APC just because we lost election.”

“I am not that kind of politician. I am with the PDP and I am committed to every effort being made by our leaders in Abuja to reposition it ahead of next elections. I support NWC and my absence does not mean I am fighting anybody.”
