Extreme democracy: Even the dead voted in NBA election, says candidate

by Isi Esene

Emeka Ngige (SAN), the candidate who was defeated in the race to choose the president of the Nigerian Bar Association has raised a red flag over the process which attended his loss to Okey Wali in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ngige claimed the out-going executive manipulated the process in his opponent’s favour. He accused them of including fictitious names and names of dead members in the voters roll.

He said: “The entire process for the elections were marred by irregularities and gross abuse of the electoral process, all aimed to achieve a desired outcome.”

He made it clear that his outburst is nothing personal but he maintains his rejection of the “electoral process [that] was mindlessly manipulated by the outgoing leadership… to truncate the true wishes of the delegates.”

Ngige explains his stance thus:

“I wrote to the general secretary of the NBA, Mr. Olumuyiwa Akinboro on 28th June 2012 requesting especially for a copy of the Delegates/Voters List. The list was never issued to me by the current NBA leadership.

“The list was eventually released for public scrutiny barely 24 hours to voting. True to our worries, the displayed list was riddled with serious anomalies, irregularities and contradictions.”

Ngige did not, however, explain why he was singled out for this alleged injustice.
