ICYMI: Ten quotes that will make you wish you were at MTN’s Drug Convos

Drug Convos

If for whatever reason, you were unable to attend MTN’s Drug Convos on June 26, we apologise on your behalf. How could you miss such awesomeness?! Except it was a matter of life-and-death, what were you doing by 1:30pm that day?

So, we are going to be ‘wickedly-nice’ and summarize the biggest moments from the event into ten of the best one-liners you have never heard:

1. Actress, Dakore Egbuson-Akande could have been a drug-peddler (thank God for good home training)!

“I was in the university and I could travel abroad at that time. Someone came up to me and said ‘oh, would you want to carry some drugs when you travel, and you’ll get paid when you get there?’ I was only 21 at the time!”

2. Ini Edo might have been at a drug-party where young Uni babes were carrying around trays of rolled up weed.

“I went to a party some time ago where Cannabis was being served on trays like food and young people not older than 25 were consuming it like it was normal!”

3. Your favourite comedian, Nedu, thinks your fave music artist is the reason your friends are trying to get high.

“I no go lie give you. Our entertainers need to speak out more and let people know that if you have inspiration, that’s it. You don’t need to take weed. And the celebrities that the kids follow these days they celebrate the taking of this thing like yeaaaaah! Ma fagbo mi!”

4. Folu Storms looks like a vision in orange and she shouldn’t wear any other colour.

“Drug abuse is a very big problem for us here in Nigeria. If you look at the numbers that are affected by drug abuse, it’s staggering!”

5. Country Manager, ViacomCBS Networks Africa, Bada Akintunde-Johnson, thinks that content distribution should be used to prevent young people from viewing uncensored content.

“As a business and a socially responsible organization [ViacomCBS Networks Africa], we have standards and protocols in place. We play only clean music videos – videos that are devoid of portrayals that can negatively influence these young, mostly impressionable people.”

6. Sadly, people just walk into music studios and hand over bottles of codeine to producers and singers – David Jones David, singer and actor shared.

“Some people come into my studio and before you say Jack Robinson, they have already put three bottles of codeine on the table, telling you ‘that’s your own o. Like it’s very normal!”

7. Well, Oliver Stolpe, Country Representative, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) mentioned that COVID-19 could lead to a sharper increase in drug abuse in Nigeria!

“We conducted a poll, and we found a really disturbing trend that it appears that drug use may even spread further due to COVID-19 and its socio-economic consequences.”

8. Senior Lecturer and consultant-psychiatrist, Yewande Oshodi explained that Cannabis is even deadlier than you can imagine!

“A substance like Cannabis almost serves the purpose on all three categories – at times it acts as a hallucinogen, sometimes as a stimulant and other times as depressants.”

9. The Nigerian minister of sports called for collaboration by stakeholders to improve the fight against drugs

“There is a need to have a coalition of private and public sector. The Government, Nollywood and the creative industry, we need to build a coalition. I think if we have a platform with a common agenda, then we can all read from the same script [and curb drug abuse.]”

10. You can come back from addiction and boss it. Sandra Meme, a dancer and student who is recovering from addiction proved this strength – she has been clean for one year!

“The major reason I shared my story was because I had a very bad experience with drugs and substance use disorder and I made promises to God, my family and myself that if I was liberated from that period in my life, I would use my voice to inspire any and everybody that could hear me.”

Oh, well, you missed the show, so you deserve only one-liners! But we are nice, so you can check here for the full details. It was two hours of no-holds-barred conversation and table shaking!
