Soldiers, policemen in gun duel over IDPs rice

A gun duel ensued between soldiers and policemen on Thursday at the Borno State Government House in Maiduguri over rice meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The IDPs who chose to stay outside camp, usually throng the Deputy Governor’s office on a daily basis to queue for hours for relief items such as rice.

Things however, took a different turn when the IDPs showed up as per usual on Thursday but had to battle for the relief items with the soldiers who were there to maintain order.

The soldiers were reported to have forced their way into the government house to fill up their vehicles with the items.

The policemen on duty got wind of the information and tried to maintain order but the soldiers reacted by firing warning shots and canisters of tear gas.

The policemen then shot back and a shootout between the two parties ensued – causing chaos among the IDPs who scampered away for safety.

Several IDPs were left injured while a policeman was shot in one of his legs during the gun battle.

The Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Brig. Gen. Lucky Irabor, intervened to restore sanity to the state.

Irabor alongside the Commissioner of Police, Aminchi Baraya, were able to get the soldiers and policemen to withdraw from the battle before they went to visit the injured policeman at the hospital.
