IT’S OVER: Vladimir Putin and wife divorce as rumours of an affair spread

Vladimir Putin has dropped a Kremlin-shaking bombshell, going on TV to say he and his wife have divorced.

The 60-year-old Russian president and his wife, Lyudmila, went on Russian state television to announce the split after 30 years of marriage.

Putin — long rumored to be catting around with a former Olympic gymnast half his age — pinned the marital meltdown on a busy schedule that has made him and his now ex-wife nearly strangers.

“It was a joint decision: We hardly see each other. Each of us has our own life,” Putin said in the interview Thursday evening.

They faced the cameras side by side after attending a performance at the Kremlin Palace of “La Esmeralda” — a ballet based on the Victor Hugo novel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

It was the first time they had been seen together in public since the inauguration of his third term as president on May 7, 2012. They left the ballet after the first act to make their announcement.

Asked why she seldom traveled with her husband, Lyudmila Putin blamed a fear of flying.

Speculation has swirled that Putin’s marriage was in trouble since 2008 reports that he was having an affair with former Olympic medalist Alina Kabayeva.

Speculation has swirled that Putin’s marriage was in trouble since 2008 reports that he was having an affair with former Olympic medalist Alina Kabayeva.

“I don’t like publicity and flying is difficult for me,” she said.

She said the divorce was “civilized” and that she and the one-time KGB officer will “eternally be very close.”

“I am grateful that he supports me,” she said.

The Putins have two daughters, Maria and Yekaterina, who are in their 20s.

“Our children have grown up; they have their own lives,” Lyudmila Putin said.

Speculation has run rampant in Russia that the couple’s marriage was on the rocks since rumors he was having affair with 30-year-old Alina Kabayeva, the former gold medal rhythmic Olympic gymnast, surfaced in a 2008 newspaper article.

Putin has denied he and Kabayeva are more than friends, and the newspaper that published the report has been shut down.
