This might not come as a surprise to many; after all, Barcelona striker Lionel Messi is a known legend. However, recently he topped expectations when he obtained the world record for the most goals in a single season – scoring an astonishing 72 in all games.
Bethlehem Steel, a player with the former US team had held the previous record of 70 goals but that was 87 years ago. Messi passed him after scoring all the goals in Barca’s 4-0 home defeat of Espanyol on Saturday night.
Sky News reported that his third goal at the Camp Nou saw him capture his 14th hat-trick in La Liga.
Messi, the current World Player of the Year, has enjoyed a historic campaign despite Barcelona failing to retain the Spanish league title. The 24-year-old player has two more games to add to his goal tally – an away match at Real Betis before the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.
