Man, 23, arrested for chopping off woman’s finger on Valentine’s Day

A young man in Lagos has been arrested and charged to court after reports that he chopped off a woman’s finger after robbing her.

The accused, Isaac John was said to have cut the fourth finger of one Ogochukwu Aronwu after snatching her handbag.

The case is being heard by a magistrate court sitting in the Ikeja area of the state which has ordered that Mr. John be remanded in prison.

The defendant is facing a three count charge bordering on robbery, infliction of wound and attempted murder, preferred against him by the police.

Magistrate Eniola Fabamwo ordered that he be remanded after going through the first count charge.

The Police prosecutor, Inspector Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on February 14, 2014 at about 7:50 p.m.

He said the incident happened along Murtala Muhammed Airport Road in Ikeja area of the state.

Okoi said the defendant, while armed with a knife and other dangerous weapons, robbed one Mrs Ogochukwu Aronwu of her hand bag containing some money and headtie.

The prosecutor also alleged that John inflicted wound on his victim by cutting off her left hand, adding that the defendant with intent to kill his victim, used a knife to cut off the fourth finger of her left hand.

However, the defendant, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty to the charges.

The magistrate then adjourned the case till March 10, 2014.
