The Media Blog: The (ugh) ‘Buzzfeed of Africa’ just got $1.1m funding, and everybody is now fully tensioned

Everyone we know is sending email threads and WhatsApp messages to everyone we know who works in the media, sharing the news that Ghana-based, Y Combinator-chilling startup, OMG Digital, which runs OMGVoice.com has just received $1.1m in seed funding.

You of course know the site if you play close attention to African media. They are not at all shy of being direct rip-offs of the Buzzfeed brand, not even attempting to improve upon the model. Just doing it like that, like that.

They have parlayed that into international renown as they consolidate on growth in Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya where they target audience.

The just-over-one-year-old (founded in February 2016) site claims it gets at least4.5million uniques a month and this money will help it expand to South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Tanzania, and of course, they will invest in “video”, because who in the world gets venture capital without video occupying pride of place on your deck?

In addition to all of that and its big goal of being in every part of the continent, the site has a food vertical called ServePot, and wants to launch tech and lifestyle verticals as well. It also, in the spirit of taking big risks with big money, they will also  launch events business, with meetups and startup conferences.

“We want to pioneer content advertising in Africa with major brands and it’s going good so far,” says Ghansah. “Brands are starting to get it and the next two years will be huge for us.”

We can’t disagree, just yet.
