Meet the 10 governors of Ekiti State

Governor Ayo Fayose as usual dropped another statement and this time it is one of those ‘Did-You-Know’ types.

According to him, Ekiti State has had 10 governors since it’s creation 20 years ago owing to “dirty politics”.

Hard to tell if his reason is correct but he was right about the State having more than the average number of governors in a 20 year timeline.

Here all 10 governors:

  1. Colonel Mohammed Inua Bala

Colonel Mohammed Bala (rtd) was appointed Military governor of Ekiti State in 1996 under General Sani Abacha’s regime.

He occupied the office of Administrator of Ekiti State (same as governor in democratic rule) from October 7th 1996 through August 1998 when he moved on to become the Administrator of Gombe.

2. Atanda Yusuf (rtd)

He was appointed by former President, Abdul Salami Abubakar as Ekiti State’s administrator during Nigeria’s transition period to democracy.

He constructed the complex that now houses the Ekiti State House of Assembly during his 10-month tenure between August 1998 and May 1999.

3. Otunba Niyi Adebayo

niyi-adebayoNiyi Adebayo served as Ekiti State’s first elected governor between May 1999 and May 2003.

He was elected under the platform of now defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD).

4. Ayodele Fayose

Governor Fayose is currently serving as a second term governor having been first elected to office in 2003 under the People’s Democratic Party umbrella.

He was impeached from office along with his deputy, Mrs Biodun Olujimi on October 16th, 2006 for embezzling state funds, marking the start of the irregularity.

5. Chief Friday Aderemi

He was acting governor for a day; between the 17th and 18th of October, 2006.

Chief Friday Aderemi passed on two years ago.

6. Tunji Olurin

Retired military officer, Tunji Olujirin was the appointed Administrator of Ekiti State after governor Fayose was impeached.

He held the forte from October 2006 till April 2007 when an acting governor was appointed.

7. Tope Ademiluyi

Tope Ademiluyi, who was a member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly was appointed  acting  governor of Ekiti State for a month between April 27, 2007 to May 29 2007.

8. Olusegun Oni

Segun-OniOlusegun Oni served as governor between May, 2007 and October 2010.

He was sacked from office following a Court of Appeal judgment that was delivered in favour of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, his opponent from the Action Congress of Nigeria during the elections.

He is now a Deputy Chairman of the South within the ruling All Progressive Congress.

9. Dr Kayode Fayemi

Fayemi1Dr. Fayemi was governor of Ekiti State from October 2010 to October 16 2014.

He contested under the Action Congress of Nigeria platform but only assumed office in 2010 when Olusegun Oni was sacked.
