The Federal Government has announced plans to construct 10,000 housing units for the Renewed Hope Medic Cities initiative. 

This project is being led by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in collaboration with the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Health, and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria. Its primary goal is to provide affordable and decent housing for medical professionals nationwide.

Housing Minister Ahmed Dangiwa stated that over 10,000 housing units are being constructed at 14 locations nationwide. This includes 3,112 units in Karsana, Abuja, 2,000 in Lagos State, and 2,000 in Kano State.

Minister of Finance promises telecoms tariff will be reviewed periodically

Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, announced that tariffs in the telecommunications sector will be reviewed periodically.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently approved a 50% hike in telecom tariffs, which has prompted several reactions, including criticism from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The NLC has condemned the federal government for allowing this increase.

In response, Wale Edun emphasised that the periodic reviews will help ensure that tariffs are fair and balanced for consumers and operators. He also urged telecommunications companies to improve service delivery with the new price increase.

Court declares Lakurawa a terrorist group

A Federal High Court in Abuja has declared the Lakurawa group as a terrorist group, prescribing the group and other similar groups in the Northern regions of Nigeria.

James Omotosho, the presiding judge, issued the order while ruling on an ex parte originating summons presented by Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice.

In the affidavit supporting the originating summons, Michael Akawu, a litigation officer in the Department of Public Prosecutions at the Federal Ministry of Justice, stated that the “Lakurawa sect/group has been involved in various acts of terrorism, including cattle rustling, kidnapping for ransom, hostage-taking, attacks on high-ranking government officials, assaults on security personnel, and the propagation of their ideology within local communities. They have also encouraged locals to disregard constituted authorities and engage in such activities throughout Nigeria.”

Ekiti State Government rejects Sharia court in Ekiti

 The Government of Ekiti State has stated that the current legal framework in the state does not recognise or support Sharia courts or an Independent Sharia Arbitration Panel. 

Mr Dayo Apata, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, made this statement in response to news reports about the first public session of the Ekiti State Sharia Panel.

He explained, “There is an established legal structure in Ekiti State, including the Customary Court, Customary Court of Appeal, and High Court, which has been effectively addressing issues related to Islamic, Christian, and traditional marriages and inheritance without any conflict or unrest.” 

He added, “The government will not take any action that could jeopardise the prevailing peace or incite hostility within the state.”

Naira gains in the official market, trades at ₦1,548/$

The Nigerian currency has recently appreciated ₦1,548/$ compared to its previous rate of ₦1,552/$.

The naira was able to meet this growth after finding its root without the constant intervention by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The naira has continued to depreciate in the black market as it trades at ₦1,665/$, losing ₦5 from its previous rate of ₦1,660/$.
