Designer Karl Lagerfeld goes off again! Calls Newsweek a ‘s****y little paper’

by Chi Ibe

Yeah we know those who care are in a vanishing minority – but iconic designer, Karl Lagerfeld, the 78-year-old Chanel honcho is in the news for making yet another controversial statement.

According to New York Magazine, when asked what he thinks of Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Robin Givhan’s recent Newsweek story that called him “overrated,” Lagerfeld said, “First of all, Tina Brown’s magazine is not doing well at all. She is dying. I’m sorry for Tina Brown, who was such a success at Vanity Fair, to go down with a s****y little paper like this. I’m sorry.”

And he seems to be hitting women the most.

He had previously called Adele fat in the media hurting the singer’s feelings in the process.

In 2009, Lagerfeld told Focus magazine that curvy models don’t belong on runways, and the only people who like them are “fat” moms. He said: “Fat mummies sit there in front of the television with their chip packets and say skinny models are ugly.” Adding that high end fashion is about “dreams and illusions, and no one wants to see round women.”

He has also offended animal rights activists. In 2009, Lagerfeld defended using fur in Chanel’s collections, telling the BBC that hunters are simply “killing those beasts who would kill us if they could.” PETA had a field day with that one, saying in a statement, “When was the last time a person’s life was threatened by a mink or rabbit?”

At YNaija, we decided to look back over the years at some of the designers most outrageous comments in the media:

1989 – On Ines de la Fressange, his ex-muse:

“I wish her all the luck in the world, just so long as I don’t have to see her anymore or hear her spoken about”

2007 – On the world’s oldest profession:

“I’m rather pro-prostitution,” the designer said, in the documentary Lagerfeld Confidential. “I admire people who do it. It can’t be much fun. Thank goodness for it. People need relief or they become murderers.”

2009 – On Heidi Klum:

“I don’t know Heidi Klum. She was never known in France. Claudia Schiffer also doesn’t know who she is.”

2010 – On Andy Warhol:

“I shouldn’t say this, but physically he was quite repulsive.”

2010 – On phones:

“I send notes. I’m not a chambermaid whom you can ring at every moment. Today, you know, most people act like they work at a switchboard in a hotel.”

2010 – On wanting children:

“If I were interested in children, I would be a godfather.”

  1. This is nice: “I send notes. I’m not a chambermaid whom you can ring at every moment. Today, you know, most people act like they work at a switchboard in a hotel.”

Some of his views are dated, and most models are too skinny to be yummy like Adele but to them she's fat whatevs. But he's right about how funny cell phone behaviour is, if you have a sense of humour.
