MTN fine: Lawmaker won’t let it go, drags two ministers to court

A member of the House of Representatives, Raphael Igbokwe, has filed a suit against the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami and the Minister of Communication Technology, Adebayo Shittu, over the reduction of the fine imposed on telecommunication giant, MTN.

The executive arm of government had reduced the fine meant to be paid by MTN from N1.04 trillion to N330 billion, thus violating the ongoing investigation into the matter by the House of Representative.

The suit, which was filed before an Abuja federal high court, is praying the court to determine whether the defendants have the right to reduce the fine imposed on MTN by the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC).

Also named in the suit are MTN and the NCC.

In his affidavit, Igbokwe noted that he is vested in ensuring the development of Nigeria hence his reason for filing the suit.

He argued that both ministers do not have the power to amend, alter, adjust or vary any provisions of a legislation or any other law validly made by the National Assembly.
