Robert Mugabe won’t ‘leave the throne’ for his wife

President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe has dropped a shocker for his wife, Grace Mugabe.

Grace, who has risen through the ranks of the ZANU-PF party, has been touted as the possible successor of Mugabe, who is 92-years-old.

Mugabe however, dropped the shocker in an interview with state broadcaster ZBC TV on Thursday, March 3, when he declared that he will not be leaving the presidential seat for his wife to take over.

He said: “Others say the president wants to leave the throne for his wife. Where have you ever seen that, even in our own culture, where a wife inherits from her husband?”

Furthermore, he revealed that the next president after him must be elected democratically.

“In a democratic party, you don’t want leaders appointed that way to lead the party. They have to be appointed properly by the people, at a gathering of the people, at a congress.”

It would appear that Mugabe does not plan to relinquish the throne anytime soon as he cautioned the bickering members of his party that he is still fully in charge despite his 36 years of ruling.

“Why successor? I am still there. Why do you want a successor? I did not say I was a candidate to retire. Leaders were elected not appointed,” Mugabe asked.
