Nahla Donna: I know what you need (30 days, 30 voices)

“There’s an Agatha in all of us – a slothful, shiftless, apathetic creature who wants to drift through life in an aimless stupor.”

‘What’s so happy about the New Year?’’ Agatha groaned as the crowd around her erupted into wild cheers and whistles. She had been railroaded into attending a New Year party by her family and friends and quite frankly, she could not wait to get back to her comfortable bed so she could sleep through the rest of the holiday.

She had no illusions about 2014 – it was going to be the same as the last year. She would gain an extra five kilograms onto her already corpulent frame, she would make no new friends, acquire no new hobbies and she wouldn’t win the lottery. She was not likely to get married or start a new business. Life would remain the same way it always had – mundane and stale.

Jacqueline, her best friend since University, came up to her and jolted her out of her reverie. ‘’Won’t you join the party? You’re missing out on all the action, standing in the corner like a wilting wallflower, ‘’ she jibed, poking her in the ribs.

Abeg, leave me, jor. Let me wilt in peace.’’

‘’I know what you need, Agatha, ‘’ Jacqueline said, looking her in the eye. ‘’You need goals for the New Year.’’

There’s an Agatha in all of us – a slothful, shiftless, apathetic creature who wants to drift through life in an aimless stupor. The problem with this approach is that it leads to a barren life – and as women, we are meant to flourish ‘’like trees planted by streams of water, which yields forth fruit in due season and whose leaves do not wither. ’’

We are meant to prosper and the road to prosperity begins by setting goals.
