NDLEA arraigns 6 for illegal possession of marijuana

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arraigned six men, on Monday, for being in possession of cannabis sativa, popularly called marijuana, without lawful authority.

According to the agency, the accused persons were arrested last month in different parts of the Lagos.

They appeared before Justice Babs Kuewumi of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

They were 20-year-old Muyideen Olanrenwaju, who was caught with 1.9 kilogrammes of marijuana on June 10, 2016 at Odo-Eran Market, along Cele Expressway; 28-year-old Olaiya Nurudeen, who was caught in possession of 1kg of marijuana at Masa Masa on June 6, 2016 and Ikechukwu Ojuogwu, who was caught at Katangua Market in the Abule Egba area of Lagos with 1.4kg of the same illicit substance on June 8, 2016.

Others were Wale Emmanuel, 21, who was also caught at Katangua Market, Abule Egba with 200 grammes of marijuana on June 8, 2016; Abubakar Usman, 21, who was found with 700g of marijuana on June 6, 2016 and Ahmed Idris, 24, who was apprehended by NDLEA operatives on June 4, 2016 in possession of 900kg of Canabis at Apapa, Lagos.

When the charge was read to them separately on Monday, they readily pleaded guilty to the offence.

Justice Kuewumi of the High Court adjourned the cases to September 8 and 9, 2016, for review of the facts of the cases and possible sentencing of the accused persons.

He ordered the prison to remand the six accused persons pending the adjourned date.
