NJC talks tough over judges’ arrest

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has condemned the invasion of the houses of two Supreme Court Justices, and two Federal High Court judges in Abuja by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Saturday.

The latest condemnation by the NJC follows an earlier one by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) which declared a “state of emergency” in the judiciary over the arrest of the judges.

Soji Oye, Acting Director media and publicity of the NJC who spoke with Business Day condemned the act, saying that the DSS might just have overreached it’s boundary, and might be driving it’s self into trouble.

A source in the NJC said the action by the DSS may not be unconnected with its desire of not wanting Justice Walter Onnoghen to succeed the outgoing CJN, Justice Mahmoud Muhammed.
