No decision has been made to embark on strike- ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday said it has not taken any decision to declare an industrial strike, contrary to reports in the media.

There had been reports credited to the ASUU Chairman Abuja chapter, Dr. Ben Ugheoke, that the union would embark on a one-week warning strike, starting from October 2.

However, ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi on Tuesday said the union has not concluded plans to embark on a strike.

He said, “The union has not taken any decision whether or not to go on strike. All that we have done so far is to sensitize members of the public about the challenges that the education sector and the university system are facing.

“Besides, I do not know how the news came about. I have put a call across to the UNIABUJA ASUU chairman, who denied ever making the declaration. We shall investigate this to know how it came about in the first place.

“Please help us to inform members of the public that we have yet to declare a strike.”

The union has insisted that the Federal Government implement an agreement signed with it in 2009.
