Militant leader arrested in Bayelsa

Officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) attached to the anti-vandal unit have arrested the suspected leader of the gang that blew up an oil pipeline in Ikienghenbiri community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

According to Vanguard, the militant leader was arrested in the swamp on Monday and has been identified as Suoyo Nathan.

Other members of the group involved in the violent act are currently on the run even as the security operatives are on their trail.

They were identified as Iyalewei and Fyneboy.

The report noted that a full scale military operation is ongoing in the swamp area with the support of Air Force fighter jets and helicopters on surveillance as well as gunboats.

A curfew has also been declared in the area.

A senior NSCDC official confirmed the development, saying, “The suspect is in our custody. He was arrested today (yesterday) with the assistance of NAOC surveillance team and would be prosecuted at the conclusion of ongoing investigation.”
