On the march again: Tinubu, Buhari visit Kwara and Sokoto to woo governors

The plan by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to add members of rival party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) , to its ranks has achieved nationwide status.

The leaders, who visited Rivers State this week to convince Governor Rotimi Amaechi to join their team, also reportedly extended their strategy visits to Kwara and Sokoto States.

The APC team led by Chief Bisi Akande, the party’s interim national chairman, reportedly embarked on visits to both states yesterday with the intention of convincing prominent members of the PDP to join them.

PM News reports:

In Kwara state, the APC leaders were received by the state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, and other leaders in the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

Akande said APC was starting a revolution that would move the nation to a progressive state.

Other members of the team included former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, former governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Speaker, House of Representatives, Bello Masari, former governors of Edo and Benue, John Oyegun and George Akume, former minister for Works, Hassan Lawal and APC interim spokesperson, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, among others.

Also speaking, Buhari stressed the need for Nigerians to come together so that the ruling PDP at the national level does not destroy the country. To him, the inefficiency as being witnessed in the PHCN, NNPC and pension fund was enough to sack any government except in Nigeria.

He said: “The present ruling government has institutionalised corruption while the corruption in the three sectors was enough to make the people vote against the party in next election. We should all come together irrespective of our background and join the APC to salvage Nigeria.”

To Tinubu, the APC remains the appropriate platform to confront the current political and socio-economic challenges bedevilling the country, stressing that solutions to unemployment, corruption, education problem and under-development lie in a strong platform which APC offers.

He said:”I want the governor to lead the people of Kwara state to APC to help rescue the sinking ship of the country so that our children don’t give us a poke in the nose.”.

Responding to the invitation by the APC, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed said the visit was significant, noting that the country is at a turning point. He said the people of the state have a political structure formed over forty years ago with hard work, zeal and commitment by the late Dr. Olusola Saraki, adding that the structure had consistently produced elected political leaders like governors, members of state and national assemblies, council chairmen and councillors, among others.

Governor Ahmed, who hoped the current crisis at the national level of the PDP would be resolved, said national interest would override self interest in the matter at the end of the day to pave way for growth and development of the nation.

He assured the APC delegation that a decision would be made on their request after consultation with the leadership of the structure.

Ahmed commended the APC leaders for pursuing national interest rather than self interest, more so with the high calibre of personalities that had come to woo them.
