Contrary to the reports that Reno Omokri has been relieved of his duties as the Special Assistant to the President on New Media, the presidential aide is still very much a member of President Goodluck Jonathan’s team.
Reports from sources in the Presidency indicate that Obi Asika, founder of Storm 360 and convener of the highly successful Social Media Week Lagos (SMW Lagos) has been appointed as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on New Media but this “does not equate to Reno’s removal.”
Reno Omokri who joined President Goodluck Jonathan’s media team in 2011 has not has the greatest of times lately as he has been implicated in several incidents which inflicts a major dent in his, and the President’s, credibility.
According to SaharaReporters, Pres. Jonathan’s move is seen as an apparent maneuver to re-energize his social media image following a slide in his electoral fortunes as well as a series of scandals involving Mr. Omokri, who shaped and ran the president’s campaign on social media.
The website continued saying the President made a decision to draft in Mr. Asika to present “a more humane outlook as his electoral fortunes slip and his popularity plummets at home and abroad.”
Sources in the Presidency, however, told YNaija that Omokri who also doubles as a pastor has not been sacked but he may have to work with Asika in a subordinate position.
“No, he has not been sacked. There’s no use removing Reno at this moment, his position may have just been invalidated,” the sources said.
“Obi Asika is now in charge of everything,” he concluded.
Omokri is, however, yet to respond to reports saying he has been sacked. We can, however, confirm that the 41-year-old author of the book, ‘Shunpiking: No Shortcuts to God’, is still functioning in his official capacity.
