Opinion: At 52, we are on course #Independence52

by Macdonald Nwaeze

The sun of hope and greatness is breaking forth the eastern sky, heralding a dawn of greatness. It is a NEW DAY Nigeria.

Today Nigeria celebrates 52yrs of Independence from the imperialist masters.

The National dailies will be awashed with editorials documenting and chronicling the frailties in our stride towards greatness. pictures of doom & depravity will be well captured and anxiety instilled in the hearts of many.

The Social Media would be buzzing with divers perspective to our National sojourn.

I have no doubt as a Nation we have not arrived at our paradise of hope. Nor are we yet at the threshing floor of National fulfillment and actualization. Despite these scenarios; there is a cry within my ransomed soul borne out of deep reflections: WE are on COURSE.

I have realised criticism is easy and cheap. Blaming passing relieves tension and pressure, while absolving you of any fault. But is this how we intend to continue wallowing as a Nation? The actions and inactions of our forebears have kept us where we are today but today we are standing at the brink of history and a new beginning to make a daring claim for our beloved country.

Some would readily blame the past rulers for our woes. Names would be called and venoms of anger (rightly) spat. Seriously thinking: how far has this taken us?

We are currently faced with two options which have lasting implications:

1. We can continue excavating the relics of our past shortcomings and failure

or

2. Decide to start drawing up an architectural plan (blueprint) for the Nigeria of our dreams. Any of the course we choose to navigate has its benefits and sacrifices.

The least we can do for the future generation is ensuring we don’t leave them with a liquidated or disintegrated Nation.

Hand-in-hand we can begin to make changes.

Despite our despair I see a great Nation.

Despite our travails I see hope.

The sun of hope and greatness is breaking forth the eastern sky, heralding a dawn of greatness. It is a NEW DAY Nigeria.

Happy Independence!
