Opinion: Who are Nigeria’s all-time Worst Actors? Tonto Dikeh? Lilian Bach? Regina Askia? – See if you agree with this list

by Chi Ibe

At the end of the day, folks will never truly agree on the matter of best or worst. As you will see below, I sincerely believe the names below are some of the worst for various reasons. I’m not saying they’re not successful—just that their talent is questionable at best.

Feel free to disagree!

Lilian Bach

Everyone but Bach knows that her acting is no good. She is a sweet woman who doesn’t act up or go out of her way to seek the spotlight, but it doesn’t obscure the fact that her acting is really bad. Her face always seems to be saying something completely different from the words coming from her lips, and when her face moves it feels like she’s had one plastic surgery session too many. Anyone so incapable of expression or fluidity simply has no business being an actress.

Carol Ekanem

There was a time of a big debate over what exactly made Ekanem a celebrity. Was she an actress, was she a model, or was she a girl who had dated 2face Idibia? I was shocked, quite frankly, by the debate, because it had always been clear to me that the surreally beautiful Ekanem couldn’t possibly be famous for her non-existent acting skills. On the screen, you got the distinct feeling that this woman going through the motions of reciting her lines was only there because the producers factored in the men lusting (for lack of a better phrase) after her and the women envying her flawless skin. It’s a relief that she got married and gave up her “career”.

Regina Askia

Many men who grew up having wet dreams over Ms. Askia will surely have my head for this, but seriously. I just finished watching the famous ‘Most Wanted’ again, and I can tell you this for free—Regina Askia didn’t become a superstar because she was a good actress. She was an amazing star, probably Nollywood’s first groupie-owning superstar. And we loved to see her on those uber-hot Collectibles billboards, but exaggerated motions and a lack of range are obvious for those who pay her a critical eye.

Tony Umez

Umez only ever has one single expression on his face. It doesn’t matter the character he is playing, it doesn’t matter what he is wearing, it doesn’t matter what location. It matters even less what he is saying—he just has that same blank stare that only moves when he pushes his eyebrows up. Surely, even he must know this. I find this my most tiring actor to watch, and it gets tiring because for some reason, he is used in so many Idumota movies. What, does he act them for free?

Ibinabo Fiberesima

Fiberesima, a former beauty queen, and then pageant organiser, is going through a lot at the moment based on a long-running court case. Hence no more shall be said on that matter. Except for this: at least can she now act to save her own life?

Nkiru Sylvanus

Yes, Sylvanus, who is now special assistant to the Imo Governor on Lagos Affairs, can cry up a storm in movies. Fantastic! Amazing! Brilliant! You made me feel so miserable after watching. Okay. But after the crying’s done, the fact that Ms. Sylvanus’s face doesn’t get rid of a perpetual crying expression is really uncomfortable to watch. It is even uncomfortable to recall at the moment.

Sandra Achums

Shoot me, but this whole trying to speak and look and act like Hollywood with those un-Nigerian expressions of rage, irritation and consternation? I think Sandra Achums started it. She was a passionate actress, but then there always was something distinctly unoriginal about the way she carried her character. When she was on the scene, I loved her star quality; but I haven’t really missed her since she went away.

Charles Okafor

Put him directly opposite Achums when it comes to that matter of forced expressions. Everything about Okafor seemed forced – he scrunches up his face when he speaks, he tries to speak like he is on an episode of ‘The Bold & The Beautiful’ which, considering his distinct Igbo accent, is always a matter of discomfort—the kind you get from staying in the toilet too long. You know what the worst thing is? He has been doing this terrible acting for so long, he has actually become quite confident about it.

Peter Bunor

He is one of those they would call a veteran—but I have always wondered if it’s alright for a man to become a veteran just because he has been acting so badly for so long. If we leave the annoying hoarse voice aside, Bunor is just annoying to watch. It’s that simple. Whatever he does, that aspires to acting, is so inadequate it really gets you enraged. I think he should just stop.

Victor Osuagwu

I have managed to break into laughter every now and again due to Osuagwu’s antics, but this is the fact of the matter: all of his movies have just one punchline, and he spends the rest of the movie trying to stretch that gimmick as much as possible. He always fails. Unlike Nkem Owoh who has true comic ability in words, action and timing, you get tired of Osuwagwu really quickly. Just watching him can drain you.

Emeka Ike

Chineke God, where do I begin? Have you been unfortunate enough to listen to an Emeka Ike interview? You can use a shovel to pack the arrogance dripping from his words. And all for what? Amateurish acting, at best. Ike looks constantly like he cannot be bothered to make the effort; like he is so good, all he needs to show up. Except, he’s not that good. I mean, he’s not bad. But after almost two decades in the industry, the fact that there is no one stand-out film to indicate his talent is enough for him to be concerned about. He needs to step his game up.

Jim Ikye

Words are not enough to describe how bad Iyke has progressively gotten each year he continues to act. I just can’t.

Tonto Dikeh/Rukky Sanda

Call me whatever you like, but I cannot treat these two names separately. These two girls are so bad that they only qualify as half an actress. Granted, Sanda is worse than Dikeh, but not by much. These two ladies typify the ‘fakeness’ I spoke about on Achums. I mean, how do you attempt an American accent when you are acting as a poor, village girl? And is that English that Rukky Sanda accepts to speak? I mean, if you grew up without a silver spoon, you actually have to go finishing school or something if you so desperately want to be able to pretend to be posh. Time and again, these two young women fail. It’s just a shame some movie-watchers have to spend their money to watch them fail so badly.

Author’s Update: This post has been updated with the very important names of Emeka Ike and Iyke. Leaving them out was indeed a costly mistake and I apologise profusely to tax-paying, peace-loving Nigerian movie-watchers.

  4. Yep!!! right on spot, you forgot to mention Nonso Diobi, Hank Anuku, Mercy Johnson (always saying “my love and using that irritating tone) and Pat attah

  5. Spot-on list, and hilarious! I would have hacked this website if Tony Umez didn’t make it on the list. You, however, forgot to include Annie Idibia. Mercy Johnson and Ini Edo suck too.

  6. i like the review however, i think some of the comments made were sentimental. The only one i disagree with is Tonto she is not a bad actress, she’s just a bad person.

  7. Ahh, someone has been bold enough to come up with a list, then? A bit subjective, seeing it is film, but on point. Well done, man

  8. you did well except from john okafor and victor and i was expecting INI EDO and MERCY JOHNSON

  9. infact I will sponsor your next article for that rukky sanda and tonto pair. LOOL, I literrally cannot stop laughing. Good job. n/b if you insult me bcos of my comments.. lol. I will find you.. and I will play the movies of these folks for you to torture you ___-

  10. OOOOOON POINTTTTTT MY GOODNESS.. WHO WROTE THIS ARTICLE? WOW? BUAHAHAHA I was there waiting to see if the next name wld be on point and u were on point every single time, plus you hit the nail on the head with your analysis… WOW. VERY IMPRESSIVE. LOL. BUT victor osuagwu makes me laugh.. good acting or not.

  11. Pat Attah is not on this list??

  12. U 4gt 2 mention Stephanie Okereke wiv hr fake wannabe accent, dt she's realy comfy wiv, truth is if u listen closely 2 hr lines, u'd hear her blunders, she irritates d hell outta mi.

  13. U 4gt 2 mention Stephanie Okereke wiv hr fake wannabe accent, dt she's realy comfy wiv, truth is if u listen closely 2 hr lines, u'd hear her blunders, she irritates d hell outta mi.

  14. I really like the look of your website. I lately built mine and I was looking for some style concepts and you gave me a couple of. May possibly I ask you whether you developed the site by youself?

  15. I was studying some of your content on this site and I believe this web site is very informative ! Continue putting up.

  16. @'Ria oh,I totally agree wit u on month abudu or wateva her name is.I thot it ws just me.God,she is sooo fake.its even more annoying wen she forms d pathetic,I'm sad face.yeah, definitely luks lik she got some back surgery done.and yes,pls chi,u NEED to write abt dese presenters too.its getting too much.they r getting too many.too many bad presenters.best thing, just put ur tv off.

  17. JIM IYKE A BAD ACTOR AND NONSO DIOBI, HANKS ANUKU, UCHE JOMBO IS NOT ON THE LIST???????? WTF!!!! PLEASE GO AND WATCH MORE OF HIS FILMS AND WHILE AT IT SEARCH FOR ONES WHERE HE PLAYS DIMENSIONAL ROLES AND SEE WHAT HE BRINGS INTO IT. AND IF YOU CALL SANDRA ACHUMS A BAD ACTRESS, ADD OMOTOLA JALADE IN THE LIST TOO BECAUSE THEY BASICALLY PERFORM ALIKE

  18. I would replace Charles Okafor with Saint Obi. Great article. We need more articles like this.

  19. The problem is simple, but overemphasised: ~Leadership~

Everything in the body is coordinated by the brain. If the people governing the industry embrace mediocrity, then what do we expect? The directors are WACK!!! Just dat we don't see them.

  20. Two Things:

In the first place, the director matters a lot. If you have seen any otherwise good actor completely ruined by appearing in the horribly-directed Super Story series, you would agree with me. This affects the dialogue too, as a lot of actors suffer because they try so hard to speak English and enact scenarios like what they see in Hollywood, I would assume in tune with the director's wishes. That is why Tinsel is so irritating to watch, and all the actors there appear to be awful. That is also the reason why some of the terrible actors are much better when they appear in Yoruba movies. Lilian Bach is a good example – as terrible as she is, she has been fantastic in the few Yoruba movies I've seen, where she didn't have to put on any uncomfortable accent. As a matter of fact, some of the finest actors we have IMO (even though we may sniff at them and not want to admit it), are Yoruba movie actors, because they play out their roles more naturally.

Secondly, I just cannot agree with the inclusion of Jim Iyke in that list. Yeah, he may appear in cheesy and questionable movies, but his acting for me is always top-notch. He portrays the bad-boy role usually given to him very well…and unlike most actors, his accent is natural.

  21. Ini edo should be on the list too. Anyone realize the females on the list are αℓℓ fair skinned with a pretty face?

  22. Pls Chiege Alisigwe deserves to be on the list too, dats anoda very terrible actress. Also if Mo Abudu ws an actress (to some extent she is) ll love to put her on the list. I don't get it, did she have surgery on her mouth, lips, were her gums stiched together and what's that fake side smile that she has going on? My brain just went to Kenny Ogunbe and D1, I won't even start with those. You should write on terrible presenters too and hosts.

  23. Fantastic list.I think tontoh dike is the worst of them all.she disgust me.i just want her to go away.

  24. Well said and accurate, I and my sis many times sit and talk about how awful these pple are. When I check the info on afmag all I wanna  is who is in the movie and that determines if I will endure the torture of watching as I am still waiting for the day ll watch a Nigerian movie and not feel insulted (seriously do they think we are dumb or are they moreso?) Or be like huh? Are they serious? You will not be hanged dear, you spoke what loads of us have been thinking. The worse of the worse for me will be Emeka Ike, Tony Umez, John Okafor (my older sis wit two grown kids had once said if she ws to appear in a movie and she arrives and sees John Okafor with no word she would leave). They all deserve to be on the list. Well done.

  25. @ esosa, abeg rest jor.gv nollywood som credit.we hav com of age and hav made impressive movies.how cud u even use dat emphathic 'GOD FORBID' wen u can't even brag of thinkin up a story.we enjoy som hollywood movies cos their stories r alien to us jst as dey enjoy ours.by d way, must we get a hollywood stamp of approval before we appreciate our own growth as an industry wt little or no govt support as against hollywood whc is heavily funded…dear esosa, minds like urs r ladden wt inferiority complex, colonial mentality and cockiness…'GOD FORBID?',na wa u o!show som luv and hav som self pride.

  26. @dee its soo anonying and like @joan said some of us watch the crap just for kicks well am always tortured into it either at the hair salon or someother public place where I have to wait to get a service.Tune into Africa magic or buy a nollywood dvd?GOD FORBID

  27. I think tony umez takes the cake, my penis has more facial expressions than that dude, that blank clueless "what am I doing here? Is that a camera? Who are all these people? Look" he always has, its pretty clear I don't like him, tonto doesn't even know what acting is, she can still get it tho…true story!

  28. Tonto dikeh's twitter response:

tontodikeh ifefasina YNaijay a jobless and stupid 4 using dat word WORST!! if u think is easy act ur own way pipo comment put **HISSSSS**

tontodikeh ifefasina YNaija am nt d type dat say sorry o regret anytin if i say STUPID dat mean wat he WROTE WAZ STUPID. respect dey say is *Reciprocal*

  29. Again, our actors shd tak critics seriously and nt seein everythn as beef.and heaven knows we need more critics who tak it as a serious job, gives ratings and awards.its all for d good of d industry and job creation in nigeria…God bless us.

  30. Wow!am glad we r gettin more informed abt what is gud and bad actin.well, most of these actors grew wt d industry wen we all knew no beta bt we kno more nw so dey shd up their [email protected] chummy, don't compare us wt ghanaians, dey r no beta at all save for one or two.basically, actin is majorly via two media;stage and screen.d problem is dat most of our actors can't differentiate d two, so d overactin comes on screen whr subtle is more and d facial expression more dan voice projection[our rantin on screen comes in] and overt body language is most needed…we can do better.

  31. OMG! I can't stand dat Tonto sl*t dike in movies. That girl needs to be kicked out from the industry.she s not a good actress, bleaches her skin, fake n pathetic accent, disrespectful to her fans and fellow colleagues. She is indeed a bad image in the industry.I suggest she becomes a porn star.As for her twin broda Muna the Vampire,he should be on the list too,so fake and ugly! Always acting the rejected roles by reasonable actors.

  32. This is definitely on point.I swear ppl watch Nigerian movies just 2 mock d ignorance and inferiority of d actors and actresses(at least that why I watch em). These amateurs definely need 2 be brushed up and 4 those wit no future ambition they shouldn't b e given roles in movies

  33. Ohh esosa,God bless u for that. Stephanie okereke should be there.she irritates me.oh,and mercy johnson too.is it just me she pisses off? ah ahn!!and ramsey Noah can be confused too.LMAO!

Funny, the great Joke Silva annoys me too.lik she forces her accent to me.

  34. Ohh esosa,God bless u for that. Stephanie okereke should be there.she irritates me.ah ahn!!and ramsey Noah can be confused too.LMAO!

Funny, the great Joke Silva annoys me too.lik she forces her accent to me.

  35. Ohh dear,oh dear.GOD BLESS YOU!ohh my,u totally got all d names right as in ALL the names.but u harsh o.see ow u finished them!ROTFLWKM!!!! Oh,God will make u bigger.I actually thot it was only me.I can't stand dem in movies.evryone of dem. @anon,I agree wit u,GOD BLESS BIMBO AKINTOLA.her accent is just d most natural of them all. Chi,I love u forever.my God,u NAILED it! Choi! ROFLMAO!

  36. U really did well, for me d worst female actresses so far arte tonto dike n ini edo n mercy johnson ooo,dia accents n all really disgust me.I watched a making of one of mercy johnson's movie n was so mad at d director or producer who ever.imagine her directin d director.as for d males, really dislike tony umez acts,(so fake) n dat one nw dat acts a lot of gay nonsense(don't knw his name)buh he is bad.

I tink all dis naija actors/actresses shud begin to learn frm dia ghana counterparts.

  37. Wow!! This has absolutely made my day. Can't get over the laughter. Personally, Lilian Bach should win the female category, but my male category winner is not on the list- Amaechi Muonagor. The listed folks are all terrible but Amaechi crowns them all!

  38. Lol!..am not really sure about sandra achums but for the others I will say a big yes…how did you get to read my mind this good?..I love you for this…

  39. Hands down, the worst of them all is most definitely Lilian Bach! And pls, some of those tinsel cast peeps are also terrible with all d accents some of them try so hard to fake!its funny though that there are no yoruba actors/actresses' names on the list.I've always thought Odunlade overacts most of the time!

  40. Lol, spot on write-up. The worst, obviously, is Tonto Dikeh. I mean, really? They allow her act over and over again? From the fakest of accents (which makes her seem to concentrate more on the accent than what she's supposed to say) to her boring acting, I wonder why she still gets roles. As for Rukky..*sigh* I have a soft spot for that bi**ch. I find her acting interesting most times.

  41. Apart from the veterans like Olu and Joke and RMD then young people like Bimbo Akintola carol king Tinsel cast dolapo oni and a hand full of good ones the rest should be taking for acting therapy!Intrestingly when I hear people say Omotola and Genevieve are good actresses I look at them like maybe they just smoked urine or ganja whats the defination of good acting?is it over acting and reciting lines?I give it to both ladies though they don't add any accents to the lines but when it commes to acting prowess naaaah they are both faaaar away from being THERE yet

  42. As a Theatre Arts graduate I am often appaled by the trash I see on TV I always tell anyone who cares to listen that if I had my way I'll remove everytrace of Africa magic from my cable list. Its a shame BIG shame they parade themseleves as celebrities and I ask what are they celebrating?BAD acting or what!Let's pls add stephanie okereke that one I always want shake and bitch slap everytime I watch her then that confused ramsey nouah, the bleached out st obi and that slutty ini edo no mata the role she oozes slut air

  43. Lol… Regina Askia, Lilian Bach, Rukky, Ekanem, Sandra Achums, Nkiru Sylvanus… These are the worst in that other. Chiege Alisigwe should be there. So also should Chinyere Winifred (Wilfred…don't know). I quite like Victor Osuagwu. He makes me laugh! Osuofia is terrible…just makes noise with little or no humour. I'll take victor over him anyday. John Okafor (Mr Ibu) is bad too. So is Pete Edochie

  44. I am super excited that finally this is out,τ̲̅ђe people that their acting disgust me †ђξ most are Rukky and Tonto. Gosh! It's painful τ̅☺ watch Tonto act please producers stop insulting us,we are not toddlers. As Fǿя̩̥̊ them Lilian Bach,Ekanem and co a pretty does ‎•̸№†̥ make a good actress. Producers, make it stop!

  45. Ur so on point, but I don't agree with some names on the list, but for me, the worst actor naija has ever seen is Lilian Bach! Then the others follow; Rukky Sanda, Regina Askia, tony Umez( lol, Tony's problem isn't his acting, its more of his person, there's just something off about him) Sandra Achums, tonto dike is ok sometimes but why does she has the same facial expression for eveRything??? As for Emeka Ike, no comment. Nkiru Sylvanus is a good actor, as is Jim Iyke, inspite of all the drama surrounding him.

  46. why is Bob Manuel, Desmond Elliot, Micheal Ezuronye, Nonso Diobi not on the list. why are they not? Regina Askia and Sandra Achums should not be on that list. neither should Charles Okafor. He has his bad moments, but he is believable most of the time. I loved regina Askia In Veno.

blame the directors too. an actor can only do so much.

as for Tonto and Rukky, na God go save us.

  47. Just glad you put jim iyke and emeka ike and tonto dikeh on this list. Thank you so much.

  48. I couldn't help myself from laughing out loud, you didn't cover enough grounds. Even the celebrated pete edochie and his old colleagues should get a bite. Their biggest problem is "over acting / drama.

  49. Spot on! I agree wiv d entire list save for Peter Bunor & Victor Osuagwu only because I dnt remember their acting too well to judge. U said it like it is, kudos!

  50. Hilarious but mostly true article. That Caroline Ekanem part was especially funny. I guess when you are pretty, appear in Tetuila's video and delta soap commercial, stardom cant elude you. But i must disagree with that Sandra Achums up there. I think she's a passable actress. Not superb but definitely not in the league of Caroline, Ibinabo and co. Kudos for a job well done

But why didnt you do the make and female separately now? Would've been more fun.

  51. Chi: You too like wahala! 🙂 Very soon, one of your listees will take you on Twitter and call you a failed journalist. LOL

  52. Infact u nailed it.Tonto and rukky are soo fake infact dey are d worst of our times,i dont get their american accent worst of all dey don even pronounce d word correctly, dey cant speak one sentence without gbagaun;God bless Bimbo Akintola

  53. Seriously i agree with so many of these names & there are more out there who by sheer luck excaped but then for just few names i really have my doubts

  54. Omg! except for Victor who I don't know, every other person deserved to be on this list! lol @ Sandra Achums, Caroline, Tony umez and Peter bunor.

  55. I find this truly hilarious. Yes, you deserve to be hanged for some of the names on this list but who'll make us laugh when you are no more?

  56. I had always hoped that someone would say these things and I am glad you just did Chi..perfectly written and it speaks our mind (for some of us) the worst for me is Tonto and Rukky…they just over act it and have a terribly fake accent OMG! Can someone send this article to them please?

cool good eh love2 cute confused notgood numb disgusting fail
