PDP’s reconciliation moves may offer Saraki a lifeline

Considering his current battles with the All Progressives Congress and the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Senate President Bukola Saraki may be offered a way of saving his political career should he end up being convicted by the Tribunal.

Saraki is on trial at the CCT for alleged false assets declaration from 13 years ago when he was governor of Kwara state.

His travails began when against the wishes of the party leaders, he emerged as Senate President after a brilliant political move which saw him allegedly partner with some members of the Peoples Democratic Party.

It would be recalled that Saraki is just one of the many other politicians who defected from the PDP to the APC before the eventual loss of Federal power by the former ruling party.

Saraki alongside Senator Rabiu Kwankanso, a former governor of Kaduna state are being wooed by the PDP to return to the party following an ongoing restructuring process.

According to Punch Newspapers, a PDP chieftain stated that the party was making moves to reconcile some of the members of the party that defected at some point.

He said the party “made a mistake by dismissing the influence of these politicians. You will recall that Kwankaso came second at the APC presidential primary. Saraki is also very influential. If we had won Kano and Kwara states in the last presidential election, the APC would not have produced the President.”

Speaking more on the reconcilatory moves, another PDP chieftain said “Kwankwaso won two governorship elections on the platform of the PDP and also served as a minister; so, he is a PDP man through and through.”

“He is being maltreated by Ganduje and the party has refused to help resolve the crisis. This governor was Kwankwaso’s handpicked man as his successor.”

“We virtually have no presence in Kano State; so, if we can get a serving Senator with a huge following like Kwankwaso, it would be a game changer ahead of 2019.”

Further investigations revealed that a Reconciliation Committee of the PDP that would see to the wooing of these former members would soon be inaugurated.

The committee would be chaired by Seriake Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa state.
