Twitter goes hard on Eldee, Peter Obi takes The Platform… | Our winners and losers from last week

We could not help but take note of the individuals who enjoyed landslide victories and successes last week. But more than winners, there were loads of people who stayed on the fence in a no win, no lose situation. President Muhammadu Buhari was one of those; his Independence Day speech did not quite hit the right spot with the majority, but everybody seemed to find satisfaction in former Anambra state governor Peter Obi’s speech at The Platform. Some even suggested that the man should run for President come 2019.

Between the EFCC, Timipre Sylva and 48 houses, well, we won’t dabble into that yet. So here are our winners and losers from last week:

WINNERS

And the winner is…

The Edo gubernatorial election held last week and the APC candidate, Godwin Obaseki emerged winner amidst PDP’s grudges and controversies about the conduct of the election. He won with a total 319,483 votes while PDP candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu followed with 253,173 votes.

Godwin Obaseki who recently admitted to being incumbent governor, Adams Oshiomhole’s “stooge” was congratulated by APC stalwarts, John Oyegun and Bola Ahmed Tinubu. President Muhammadu Buhari also sent in a congratulatory message saying the result of the election is a reflection of the mood of the people of Edo state. The PDP has since rejected the election result and have accused INEC of manipulation.

32 years wait births a trophy

Nigerians do not care much for local football leagues but last weekend, Enugu Rangers gave us an attention-worthy victory as they clinched their first NPFL title since 1984. The Enugu Rangers defeated El Kanemi warriors of Maiduguri with a 4-0 win. The team will be rewarded with a sum of N40m for this historic victory.

From The Platform to the throne (or maybe not)

This year’s Independence Day edition of Covenant Christian Centre’s biannual developmental seminar, The Platform saw one man shine through and through in the most unexpected way. Former Anambra state governor, Peter Obi stole the show with his no-holds-barred speech on the rot in the system of state governance in Nigeria. A revelation like: “It costs an average of N2 billion to run the office of the First Lady in every state in Nigeria. Multiply by 36.” definitely got tongues wagging on social media and Peter Obi was the star of this year’s Independence Day celebrations. A few people could not help but remind the excited lot of Mr. Peter Obi’s mistakes while he was governor.

LOSERS

Because Twitter never forgets…

When Eldee tha Don came to Twitter on Sunday morning (Nigerian time) to rant about Amber Rose’s Slut Walk and the “glamorization of hoes” in the media, the former musician must have envisaged massive support from Nigerians. Little did he know that Twitter streets are rough and the majority of Nigerians in that space are the most unpredictable you can find anywhere in the world. His comments were met with bashing and a reminder of how his own music videos back then promoted everything he speaks against now. Twitter NG dug up Eldee’s tweets from far back as 2010 when he was a big fan of Amber Rose and would do anything to meet her. Lanre Dabiri lost big time on this one. This perfectly sums up the gist.

Trouble lives with MTN

The telecommunication company had to defend itself in the money laundering allegations brought against it before the House of Assembly by Senator Dino Melaye two weeks ago. The last week, bad press caught up with them again when some staff accused the company of laying them off without paying up their outstanding salaries. They have denied these allegations but notwithstanding, it still does no good for the company image.
