Neequaye Dreph Dsane paints London in #BlackGirlMagic as part of his ‘You Are Enough’ series

As part of his ‘You Are Enough’ series, London-based Ghanaian artist Neequaye Dreph Dsane has painted London walls with huge images of women of African and Caribbean origin.

The 43-year-old street artist is hoping to shine the light and empower “amazing women who are not given the visibility they deserve.” There will be 10 colourful hand-crafted murals located around Shoreditch, Penge, Bruce Grove, and Croydon. “I wanted to pay tribute and acknowledge black girls and women. Every portrait I paint is a reflection of black women, and indeed all women. We are all born of a woman and by presenting my subjects in such a strong, powerful and naturally beautiful way, I hope to inspire as I am inspired. This series is a larger than life tribute to the unsung heroines who work tirelessly for the benefit of our people and society at large,” he told The Voice.

All his paintings have backstories of women who do extraordinary work for the betterment of their communities and society. Best known for his large-scale portrait paintings in the street, Neequaye Dreph Dsane graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Illustration in 1997 and was inspired by ‘80s British underground comics such as 2000 AD including ‘70s New York subway graffiti. “My mission is to present an alternative black British narrative. I have been making art in the streets for the past three decades. I am fortunate to have been able to paint in Africa, Asia, the UAE, Central and South America and throughout Europe.”

After 3 decades of street-based work, Dreph is regarded as a stalwart of the scene.
