Gunmen, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, on Saturday kidnapped Pa Dariye Defwan, the 87- year-old father of the former governor of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye.

It was reported that the gunmen, numbering about nine stormed the home of the octogenarian in the Mushere area of Bokkos in Bokkos Local Government Area on Saturday evening. They were said to have shot sporadically to scare people away before whisking away their victim on a motorcycle in the direction of Wamba in the neigbhouring Nasawara State.

A family source said that the kidnappers were yet to make any contact with the family as Dariye, who is a serving Senator, representing Plateau Central, is said to be making effort to rescue his father.

Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Emmanuel Abuh, who confirmed the incident, said the police were in hot pursuit of the kidnappers.

He added that the police were combing the entire area, while bullet shells were picked up by investigators to ascertain the calibre of weapons used in the operation.

“We are yet to know the motive behind the kidnap, but investigations are ongoing to determine the reasons behind the kidnap of the old man,” Abuh said.
