President Putin signs new law to stop Russians from accessing prohibited websites

Following Apple’s recent announcement that it had removed virtual private networking apps from its China App store on orders from the government, President Putin has banned  VPN services in Russia too.

According to Reuters, President Vladimir Putin signed on Sunday, a law that prohibits any technology that provides access to websites banned in Russia, including VPN’s.

Already approved by the lower house of parliament, the law will ban the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) and other technologies, known as anonymizers, that allow people to surf the web anonymously.

Head of the Duma’s information services Leonid Levin said the law is not intended to impose restrictions on law-abiding citizens but is only meant to block access to “unlawful content,”.

The law will go into full effect on Nov. 1.
