President Trump tweeted about Senate Democrats and how slow they were, however, failing to comment on the reports from New York Times which said Trump Jr. had prior notice that the Russian government was trying to help elect his father into office.
On Sunday, Spokesman for President Trump’s personal lawyer Mark Corallo, told The Times the president “was not aware of and did not attend the meeting” with Veselnitskaya, this move indicates an early effort of the White House to distance itself from the first son. Trump Jr. also tweeted his statement and posted the email thread
On Monday, the New York Times revealed that Trump Jr. was informed via email ahead of the meeting that the promised information was linked to the Russian government and its attempts to tilt the elections in his father’s favor. U.S. intelligence agencies have all agreed that Russia, under the direction of President Vladimir Putin, actively worked on an influence campaign to help Trump get elected. At the G-20 summit last weekend, Putin denied any involvement in such machinations.
The world is used to seeing President Trump swoop in to defend any member of his circle who was under the radar of mainstream media, from Michael Flynn, former national security adviser, to first daughter Ivanka, but such a long silence from the presidence is quite strange.
