Railways will resume Kano-Lagos services by end of year – Maku

by Isi Esene

The Nigerian Railways Corporation (NRC) will resume its services between Lagos and Kano by December. This was disclosed by the minister of information, Labaran Maku, while leading the Good Governance Tour Team on a demonstration ride from Akere to Zungeru.

He said the NRC operations was hindered by the collapse of a military bridge a few years ago between Zungeru and Akere in Niger State.

Maku announced that the bridge had been repaired but the stretch of tracks remaining is between Zungeru and Minna which is at the completion stage.

The information minister said reviving the railway system after many years of neglect is one of the cardinal points of the present administration, which is fast coming into fruition.

He went on to reel out the number of rail  projects currently being undertaken by the federal government, saying that work is already at an advanced stage on the standard gauge line between Ajaokuta and Warri, and also the construction of speed train line between Abuja and Kaduna is ongoing.

The Minister said the Federal Executive Council (FEC) last month awarded a contract for the design of a standard gauge line between Lagos-Abuja while contract for the construction of a Standard gauge between Lagos-Kano has also been awarded.
