“Book 122 of 2017 – “The pressure cooker” by Nkiru Olumide-Ojo. 110 pages. Reading time – 2.5 hours

Reading this book was a treat as it gave me a much needed confidence boost during a trying period.

Nkiru is a senior executive who shares her leadership journey, telling relatable stories about how she started her career and techniques she implemented (or wished she implemented) to get to the top.

I like how she talks in a refreshingly open manner about the challenges women can face in the workplace.

She did not shy away from topics like subtle sexism (and how to handle it),  speaking up and protecting yourself by deciding what situation you want to remain in.

Another thing she perfectly expressed was how women should be deliberate about what they want in their careers and personal/home/ love life. Then find the courage to ask for help/ support from the people who surround them or people within their sphere of influence.

She talks about mentorship but goes a step further to express that mentees should also be proactive and take the initiative.

Although her target audience in the book seems to be females, I really think it is an opportunity for men to read this book as they’ll understand how to support and encourage the women in their lives better.

Favourite Quote:

“In reality, to get ahead, you do not only have to be right, you have to convince other people to see things your way. Sometimes, you also have to abandon being right for being considerate.”
