Del Potro who also defeated world number one Novak Djokovic will now face world number 2 and Olympics defending champion Andy Murray in the final.
Hosts Brazil qualified for the semi-finals of the football event by beating South American rivals Colombia. Goals from Neymar and Luan was all the Brazilians needed to book a place to face another South American team Honduras who defeated South Korea 1-0 in the quarter final.
The USA still top the medal standings with a total of 60 medals, 28 of which are gold. China remains second with 13 gold out of a total of 41 medals.
