The “safest state” in the North-East, Gombe, casts a nervous eye on its youth

by James Sambo

Residents of Gombe, the state with by far the best security record in the North-Eastern geopolitical zone of the country, are worried over rising cases of youth restiveness in the state.

Yesterday, state governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo’s Chief of Staff, Ahmed Yayari, announced that late last week, two employees of the State Social and Community Development Agency (Gombe Marshals) were killed in Gombe by some restive youths.

Advising youths to shun vices that can destroy their future, Yayari described the killing of the two Gombe Marshals as unfortunate.

According to him, “Three days ago, two of our marshals were killed just behind the Gombe Emir’s palace, near the house of Kwami Local Government Chairman, Ali Jijji, by some of these reckless youths.

“What is the benefit of killing someone. I am pleading with our youths to shy away from such a bad habit because it will not lead them anywhere. It will only destroy your future. This should be the last time we would see such occurring in Gombe.”

Yayari had made a similar appeal about two weeks ago at Kumo, Akko Local Government Area of the state, when some youths clashed, leaving many of them injured.

Governor Dankwambo on assumption of office had floated a rehabilitation programme through the state Agency for Social and Community development to stop the trend.

But the rising cases of Kalare in recent times are giving residents of the state sleepless nights, especially as the 2015 general election approaches.
