The House of Representatives had their own share of the recent fracas happening in the house, as lawmakers threw caution to the wind and exchanged blows for leadership positions.
After the house resettled, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, adjourned plenary till July 21. He said that the adjournment was to give the Senate ad-hoc committees on legislative agenda and financial review time to conclude their work and submit their reports.
Premium Times reports that Saraki had earlier inaugurated the two committees on Thursday after the adjournment.
In a statement on Friday, Saraki said the two committees were given one week to submit their reports assuring that the senate will reconvene at any time before the adjourned date to consider any matter of urgent national importance or to attend to any national assignment requiring its attention.
“The Senate’s ad-hoc committee on financial review is the first time the Senate is setting up a body to review its own salaries, allowances, and the overhead cost of running the Senate with a view to realigning them to reflect the present economic situation in the country,” the statement said.
The National Assembly (NASS) had slashed its 2015 budget to N120billion from N150billion as a result of dwindling federal government revenue, which Saraki explained was part of the National Assembly’s belt-tightening measures in view of the current economic realities in the country.
Setting up financial review committee after shamelessly pocking billions of Naira in this hard times for majority of Nigerians! As most of the legislaters have turned politics into money making business, nothing will come out of such a review! I’m sure some of them could even mastermind impeaching the senate president if their sickening financial largesse is tamperred with! Its just a move to silence Nigerians as they are sort of embrassed that their greed has been exposed!
