Lawmakers fightback: Petition against CCT Chairman sponsored by Melaye’s NGO

The Committee on Public Petitions has been directed by the House of Representatives to investigate the allegations of corruption leveled against the Code of Conduct Tribunal Chairman, Danladi Umar, by a non-governmental organization.

The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, gave the directive on Tuesday, 10th November, following the laying of the petition before the house by Hon Rima Shawulu.

The Anti-Corruption Network, founded by Senator Dino Melaye, submitted a petition to the House with claims that in March 2011, Umar awarded contracts for the supply of office furniture and fittings at N11.3 million which was executed by ‘an engineering company and not a furniture or supply outfit’.

The petition further stated that Yakubu Umar withdrew up to the sum of N1 million from the CCT to bankroll his wedding in July 2011.

Also included in the petition is the accusation of the frivolous spending of N15.2 million by Umar to purchase a luxury Toyota Prado sport utility vehicle “without following due process” as well as an alleged payment of N4.2million for the “purchase of welfare items” in a contract executed by a private individual.

The petition was signed by Ajulo Ajulo, the NGO’s current executive secretary, a position which Dino Melaye has held in the past.
