Cambridge Professor Jason Arday found dead days after resignation
British academic and sociologist Professor Jason Arday has been found dead at his home in south London, days after resigning from the University of Cambridge amid plagiarism allegations and questions about aspects of his professional history. He was 41.
The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to his address shortly after 3pm on Friday by the London Ambulance Service. Arday was pronounced dead at the scene, while his family has been informed and is receiving support. Police said the death was unexpected but not believed to be suspicious.
Arday became Cambridge’s youngest Black professor when he was appointed Professor of Sociology of Education in 2023. He resigned last week, saying the continued allegations and public scrutiny had taken a significant toll on him and those close to him.
T.I Blaze, Seyi Vibez and Shallipopi accuse Dapper Music boss of contract breaches
Nigerian artistes T.I Blaze, Seyi Vibez and Shallipopi have publicly accused Dapper Music CEO Damilola ‘Dapper’ Akinwunmi of contract breaches and financial impropriety. The artistes aired their grievances on X on Friday, alleging issues involving unpaid royalties, unexplained revenue and the unauthorised use of intellectual property.
T.I Blaze claimed his intellectual property was licensed without his consent and questioned how ₦1.2 billion in revenue was allegedly left unexplained. He also said his contract had expired and that he was owed money, claiming he had waited seven months for an amicable resolution.
Seyi Vibez also criticised the label boss, alleging that money owed to him was used to sign other artistes and accusing Dapper of manipulation and a lack of transparency. As of the time of the report, Dapper Music and Akinwunmi had not publicly responded to the allegations.
Sowore fires back at Davido in fresh Osun political row
African Action Congress (AAC) 2027 presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has responded to Davido after the singer referred to him as “arindin”, a Yoruba term for a foolish person, on social media.
Sowore directed his response at Davido’s uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, questioning his academic history. He claimed Adeleke obtained the equivalent of a GED after serving as a Nigerian senator and accused him of supporting President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election to protect his family’s political interests in Osun State.
Davido had criticised Sowore after the activist said Adeleke had “nothing upstairs”. In response, Sowore accused the governor of treating Osun as a “private estate” and suggested that his political decisions were driven by family interests. Neither Davido nor Adeleke had responded to the latest claims at the time of the report.
Marvel unveils cast for highly anticipated X-Men film
Marvel Studios has finally announced the cast of its highly anticipated X-Men film, with the superhero movie set to hit cinemas on May 5, 2028. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made the announcement alongside director Jake Schreier at the Disney Entertainment Showcase Panel at D23.
The cast includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost. Christopher Abbott will play Professor Charles Xavier, while Inde Navarette joins as Rogue and newcomer Maya Boyd will portray Storm. Two-time Oscar nominee Adam Driver will play the villainous Mr Sinister.
The announcement marks a major step in Marvel’s plans to bring the X-Men fully into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. The 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine further connected the former Fox characters with the MCU, featuring several returning actors and introducing new mutants.
Atiku sues Tinubu and seeks disqualification over alleged NYSC certificate forgery
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have sued President Bola Tinubu over the alleged forgery of his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate, seeking his disqualification from the 2027 presidential election.
The suit was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) joined as defendants. Atiku also appeared at the court registry to swear to an affidavit supporting the case, which he said concerns the constitutional requirements for occupying the presidency.
The plaintiffs are challenging Tinubu’s eligibility under the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2026. They are relying on Section 137(1)(j) of the Constitution, which states that a person is not qualified to contest for president if they have presented a forged certificate to INEC.
