Senate passes budget resolution clearing the way for tax reform

The Senate late Thursday night, passed the 2018 budget resolution which enshrines a reconciliatory provision that deflects any Democrats filibuster and thereby paved way for a tax reform.

President Trump who had initially expressed cautious optimism towards getting the required vote commended the Congressional GOP, particularly the Senate majority leader for the skill set displayed that afforded them to pass the bill with a simple majority, without relying on the “obstructionist” Democrats.

“Great news on the 2018 budget @SenateMajLdr McConnell – first step toward delivering MASSIVE tax cuts for the American people! #TaxReform”, Trump tweeted happily.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell needed this win in order to have a leg to stand on, after failing miserably on many important bills including Obamacare so far under the Trump administration and there have been calls for him to step down.

Since this bill is different than the House’s version it will need to return to the lower chamber to them for approval before it can take effect.

Meanwhile, shortly after the votes, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) said in a statement: “This nasty and backwards budget green light cuts to Medicare and Medicaid in order to give a tax break to big corporations and the wealthiest Americans. It shifts the burden from the wealthy and puts it squarely on the back of the middle class, and blows a hole in the deficit to boot.”
