Senate to pass bill to reduce high house rents

The Nigerian Senate is reportedly working on a bill that will check the high rate of house rents in Abuja and other parts of Nigeria.

The Senate Committee Chairman on Federal Capital Territory, Senator Dino Melaye, has said.

According to Punch, he said the ‘Rent Edit’ bill would protect tenants and landlords and promised that lawmakers would ensure the passage of the bill before the end of the 8th Senate.

Melaye disclosed this in a statement issued by the Director of Information at the housing arm of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Eno Olotu, in Abuja, on Wednesday.

He said, “Not everybody can own a house. The Rent Edit Bill will help guide and curb excessive rents in the Federal Capital Territory and the nation at large.”

  1. I do not know why Sen. Dino Melaye think b4 he sponsored House Rent Bill. rather than Bill to reduce prices on Building Materials in the country. To reduce house rents in major cities in the country govts must build low cost estates as Gov. Jakande did in his time, interest on bank loans to a single digit and cost on building materials reduced otherwise efforts in passing rent bill will be in futility.

  2. what kind of leaders do we have in this country Nigeria?. now i see these government has confuse people that can not think right at the Senate. NONE of u couldn’t think on how to reduce the price of CEMENT FROM #2700 and Iron rod.#1800 and #2200. All u could think of is how to reduce house rent.

  3. extend it to all the cities in Nigeria and make sure it is enforced. house rent is a major issue here in Nigeria.
unnecessary extortion from landlord will be reduced seriously
