Early 2016, the short film Hell Or High Water made in association with Nigerian LGBT rights group TIERS Nigeria broke real glass ceilings in Nollywood. Before it there have been LGBT films, but those ones always portrayed sexual minorities as sinful, deviant and evil; something to be purged by prayer and public shaming. The Hell or High Water film did the opposite, showed LGBT people as multi-dimensional, having to deal with familial obligations, stigma and self hate.
The Hell or High Water had many firsts. It was the first Nigerian LGBT film to be premiered in Nigerian cinemas, it was the first to have two mainstream actors as its co-leads, it was the first to challenge conventional stereotypes. And now, it is available on Youtube.
