Shocking resignation of Ondo SSG heightens speculation on ‘tough hurdles’ for Governor Akeredolu

Secretary to the Ondo State Government, Ifedayo Abegunde, has resigned his position; raising speculations about the reason for his unforseen exit.

Abegunde who until Monday served as number 3 man in the cabinet of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, tendered his resignation on Monday; declaring that it was time for his leave. In the statement, he said that he was leaving for “personal reasons” and he had done his best during his time in office.

Coming on the heels of the Deputy Governor’s resignation and defection to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the Governorship primaries of the major parties, as well as the timing which coincides with the Governor’s isolation on account of his COVID-19 treatment, the action has heightened speculations of a stifled relationship between the SSG and Governor Akerodolu.

Many Nigerians are predicting that Abegunde’s departure precedes a defection from the ruling APC to the PDP, judging from the line of action of the Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi. Some condemned the move and described Abegunde as selfishly ambitious while comparing it what they termed as “betrayal” by the Deputy Governor.

Other Nigerians had a lot to say about the disintegration of the APC, referencing several defections that have happened in a short span and at a crucial time. They commented that this fallout might be as a result of Adams Oshiomhole’s inglorious exit as National Chairman of the APC. They argued that the APC has been reduced to shambles and is disorganised.

Asked if he would be dumping the ruling party, Abegunde said, “I have just told you I have resigned and nothing more.”
