Steve Scalise remains in critical condition | President Trump calls for prayers

Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip who was shot by a gunman during a baseball practice in Virginia, Wednesday is in critical condition in a Washington hospital according to reports and will require additional surgeries after a bullet pierced his hip, injured his organs causing “severe bleeding”.

President Trump and first lady Melania visited him at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Northwest D.C., where he has undergone two procedures, and several blood transfusions,” Scalise was brought to the hospital in “shock” the hospital said in a statement. Along with Scalise, the gunman shot two police officers, a congressional aide and a lobbyist.

The president later tweeted;

 

Scalise office released a statement, “Prior to entering surgery, the Whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone. He is grateful for the brave actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues, we ask that you keep the Whip and others harmed in this incident in your thoughts and prayers.” The first family spoke with Scalise’s doctors and sat with him during their visit, they also met with Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner and her wife.

“We may have our differences, but we do well in times like these to remember everyone who serves in our nation’s capital is here because, above all, they love our country. We can all agree we are blessed to be Americans,” Trump said in a televised address Wednesday morning. He also called Trump Scalise “a very good friend,” “a patriot” and “a fighter,” and said the prayers of his family, the nation and the world were with him
