Why we supported Jonathan | Afenifere wants Buhari to understand something

by Kolapo Olapoju

Socio-cultural Yoruba group, Afenifere, has released a communique explaining the rational behind its support of President Goodluck Jonathan in the recently concluded presidential election.

According to the group, the support of Jonathan over president- elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), was done in the interest of the Yoruba race and the entire country.

This position was communicated in a communique issued on Wednesday, April 29, after its monthly meeting at the country home of its leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, Ondo State.

The group congratulated Buhari on his victory in the election, while advising him to implement the resolution of the national conference held last year.

Furthermore, Afenifere said its decision to support President Jonathan’s re-election should not be misunderstood by Nigerians.

“The position was taken in the overall interest of the Yoruba race and the country.

For the avoidance of doubt, the president-elect, himself would attest to our not being induced in supporting him in 2007. We were certainly not induced to support President Jonathan.”

“Our decision was based on our age-long commitment to support a presidential candidate committed to restructuring of Nigeria.”
