Supreme court overturns state ruling that blocked birth certificates for same sex couples

The Supreme Court has overturned a state court ruling that allowed the state of Arkansas refuse to include the names of both same-sex spouses on birth certificates, Huffington post reports.

The ruling was in favor of lesbian couples throwing out a ruling by the Arkansas Supreme Court in December that upheld the refusal to name the wives of the birth mothers as parents on birth certificates.

The Arkansas court ruling was that state officials did not have to name both same-sex spouses as parents on birth certificates, though state law allowed the birth mother’s opposite-sex husband to be listed even if the baby is not biologically related to him, according to reports.

Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas disapproved the Supreme Court ruling, arguing that the lower court decision should not have been reversed.
