Surety dragged to court in Lagos as theft suspect absconds

A surety, Yekini Arowolo has been dragged before an Itire Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on Tuesday over his inability to produce an accused.

51-year-old Arowolo is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and an attempt to pervert the cause of justice, however he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to Ezekiel Ayorinde, the prosecutor,  Arowolo had failed on several occasions to ensure that the accused (Ademola Adeleke) whom he stood surety for appeared at the Mushin Police Post, Lagos.

He explained that Arowolo entered into an agreement to produce Adeleke at the station and had refused to comply, adding that the surety was apprehended recently.

According to the law, any person who conspires with another to obstruct, prevent, pervert or defeat the course of justice is guilty of felony and is liable to imprisonment of seven years.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 409 and 97 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused was granted bail by Magistrate Abegunde Davis in the sum of  N40,000 with two sureties in like sum.
