Tension eases in Yobe as lawmakers deny plot to impeach Gaidam

by Abubakar Sadiq

The decision of Yobe State lawmakers not to go ahead with alleged plot to remove the state governor, Ibrahim Gaidam has diffused tension in the state, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced.

After weeks of rumoured scheming, members of the state House of Assembly finally denied reports, last week, that they had perfected plans to impeach Gaidam.

In its response this, contained in a statement made available to journalists in Damaturu by the state Secretary of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Bakabe, the APC said the announcement by the lawmakers was in the overall interest of the state.

Bakabe said that the lawmakers’ decision had also calmed frayed nerves among APC supporters across the state, saying “the party commended the timely response of the legislators to the allegation and also passed a vote of confidence on the governor,”.

He hailed the legislators “for refusing to be distracted by political job seekers planning to sow seed of discord among our party members and to over heat the polity”.

“As the ruling party in the state, APC has a sitting governor, three senators, six members of House of Representatives, 24 members of the State House of Assembly and 17 local government chairmen.

“All the elected officers are collectively united and focused to the task of developing the state. The legislators under the leadership of the Speaker, Alhaji Adamu Dala-Dogo, have clearly disassociated themselves from the alleged impeachment plot and endorsed him (the governor) for 2015,” he said.

The party expressed its support to the lawmakers, saying “we assure you of our strong support and commitment to protect our party structure and government”.

Bakabe praised the people for their cooperation to the APC-led administration in the state which he pledged would continue to provide viable development projects. He listed the projects to include roads, healthcare delivery, functional education and employment opportunities for the benefit of the people.

Gaidam had only last week approved the payment of almost a billion naira in arrears to pensioners in the state, but no word was given as to how much was owed.
