The first episode of “Tobi Live” should be erased from the internet and never to be recovered

It’s one thing to be a reality TV sensation and then become a bonafide celebrity. And it is starkly another thing to be a YouTube vlogger. For Tobi Bakre, the distinction isn’t that much clear, and we can’t seem to process the small horror of seeing Tobi as he hosted the first episode of his vlog Tobi Live.

So what happened? Let’s start with the intro: a boring monologue where Tobi sits alone in an office-type room, possibly thinking that Tobi Live is the bomb, the coolest thing that he alone could have come up with. As he talks, there’s a swirling echo that distorts the quality of his speech, and it’s almost like no one in the editing department saw this.

When Tobi is shown with his guests – The Dephinator and Elozonam – to discuss the topic Social Media Trolling, I tried to convince myself that Tobi could only be trolling viewers with the plain, unclassy set and the vapidness of the entire show. If I were a true fan of Tobi, TobiNation or something, I’d have cried a flood of hot tears.

Social Media Trolling was a misfire because nothing fresh or thought-provoking was presented. It was such a tepid, circuitous episode and the show, at large, is competitively flat to warrant continued audience indulgence. Tobi is a great guy, but Tobi Live needs more than just his celebrity pull to make it work.
