While the nation is still grappling with the tensions created by the ongoing Operation Python Dance II in the Southeast, the Nigerian Army on Saturday, september 16,2017 announced its intention to launch another operation codenamed Operation Crocodile Smile II In the Southsouth region and some parts of the Southwest.
The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, stated this in an interview with signature TV on Saturday. Why the Nigerian army wants to embark on such misadventure is what we are yet to know, it’s reasons and the conditions warranting such intervention have not been made known. We tagged this a misadventure because of its timing and non-appropriateness of such in an environment where peace reigns.
At the moment, there is no ethnic tension or uprising in any part of the Southwest and the Southsouth. The militancy activities, spearheaded by the niger delta avengers, has come to an end after intense negotiations with the group by the federal government which is reflective in our crude oil output.As a result, militarising the regions will create security imbalance and unnecessary tensions.
The agonising effect of operation crocodile smile I in the Southsouth in August 2016 is still fresh in the memories of the residents.Many are still counting their loss including the main target of the operation Mr Government Ekpemupolo (tompolo) who lost his father due to the injuries inflicted on him by the military.
Also, the tensions created by operation python dance II in the south-east which is currently reverberating across the country and the social media, will be aggravated should the military embark on this exercise in the Ssouthsouth and the Southwest.
We will like to advise the military not to embark on its proposed operation crocodile smile II.The federal government too must call the military to order to prevent a total breakdown of law and order in the country, and to protect the nascent peace and tranquillity being enjoyed in the south-south and the Southwest region of Nigeria.
