“The Washerman” trailer is everything we have seen before so what’s new?

If I’m being honest, I nearly screamed when I read “desperately in search of love” in the plot synopsis of Charles Uwagbai’s upcoming romantic comedy The Washerman. Even typing out “romantic comedy” hurt my fingers. Released yesterday, and preceded by the arrival of a film poster showing a red thong clipped to a washing line, and Etinosa Idemudia wearing a wedding dress holding a bouquet, I knew The Washerman was touching all the elements to create its own box office boom.

And there’s a couple of cute faces – Bryan Okwara, Chris Okagbu and Mofe Duncan – to satisfy your lust. But what is The Washerman really about? It’s hard to say from the trailer which began to confuse me from a minute in, as with most other Nollywood film trailers. I do have an inkling though: KC (Idemudia) is a blogger who is, oh Lord, desperately searching for love and there’s a scene in which she prays to God for this request.

IK Ogbonna plays the titular washerman, the guy who falls in love with KC while washing her undergarments. And he stammers, he’s clumsy and not smooth and definitely not what KC had in mind. The whole idea of the movie is hinged on the overused device of wishing for something and the materialisation of the unexpected. Try again, Nollywood.

The movie also stars artistes like Sexy Steel, Sound Sultan, and Jayson Juwonlo, comedian Frank Donga, Judith Audu, Stephen Damian and more. So if The Washerman is your thing, you can catch it in cinemas August 31.
