Lagosians have been grumbling on social media about today’s rains and the mega flooding that resulted. Affected areas were VI and most of Lekki.
The thread below shows that both residents and the government are culpable in this matter. If town planning was actually practiced by the government, residents will not build houses on waterways. If residents are concerned about their environment, they will not toss waste into drainages.
Wait a minute, why do we even have open drainages in Nigeria? Isn’t that like placing a fish before a cat?
Here’s what the brainstorming session on flooding revealed:
It’s illegal town planning
My Grandpa as a Surveyor devoted a good number of his Years to Lagos Town Planning..I have seen Houses built where Canals were planned

Reactions:
The Federal Government of Nigeria foresaw Lagos' urban planning problem. Guess their solution:
They simply left Lagos.
True story

It’s indiscriminate sand filling
@alkayy Only build on canals? What about indiscriminate sandfilling? Banana&Orange Island, Ilubirin, Oworo end of 3MB etc
— Tweets (@ad_Vassilli) July 8, 2017
The sand filling if well executed, might even help by absorbing the blow from the Ocean..if factored

Solution: Demolish all
Lagos cannot substantially fix its flooding issue without a correctional demolition of buildings. Who is ready for the socio-political cost? https://t.co/lhDej7Qu5W

It’s our waste disposal methods
#PickThatTrash this one of the numerous reasons lagos is flooded pic.twitter.com/X3yhhzsSnr

@Plumbtifex in the short term, Lagosians should stop emptying their bins on the roads or in the drainages. The Domino Effect.

Lagos is like a gigantic SS anemic patient, where the sickle cells are obstructing normal blood flow
— Mayo (@akinmayo) July 8, 2017
It’s Ambode
On that matter, I'm just watching because the State Govt just cut off PSPs and Waste disposal is now at LG discretion
— Plumbtifex Rantimus (@Plumbtifex) July 8, 2017
Bcos ppl are not paying and Lagos is having to pay these waste mgt companies.

Which party is responsible for waste management in the state?

Your Excellency @AkinwunmiAmbode a megacity with no mega drainage plan is a mega calamity sir?? @HenshawKate @DEMOLAEXPOZE @denikeoyetunde pic.twitter.com/ZSaRKgnQeI

And the govt can't make efforts to get things right , since people don't pay , we should have to live with this mess. Mega city indeed

Solution: Think like Venice
Lagos is an aquatic state. Use this as a basis for development. It presents opportunities as well as challenges. Think about Venice!

A tale of two Governors
@tundefashola made a duty to clear drainage before rainy seasons & ensured refuse clearing.@AkinwunmiAmbode disbanded them. Drainages full

The buck stops with government
I've often said when real estate are being sold, govt shld make sure sellers have basic provisions in places as road and drainages at least.
— official.realist (@iamSalonzo) July 8, 2017
It's baffling and the govt doesn't make a priority for that, just collect their own dues and leave the rest to the buyer

Lekki’s future: Yatch homes
Funny thing is when climate change really hits, Lekki "big boys and girls" will simply buy yachts & live in them.
We are wired like that.

Nigeria specializes in lack of preparation. CC favours Nigeria in terms of agriculture and water availability but they ain't ready
