TICKER: Nike’s “Gold Digging” t-shirt causes controversy

Nike has caused controversy by putting out t-shirts that remind you of the kinds of women who most men don’t want to have anything to do with.  Remember the gold diggers?  Nike is taking advantage of the label with new t-shirts that they claim are designed to support the women’s Olympians who went out and conquered in London this summer.

The new “Gold Digging” t-shirt is only available in women’s sizes, but is getting some oversized controversy.  The company says that it’s not trying to disrespect women, but rather, it’s attempting to celebrate the 46 gold medals won by the US women’s Olympic team.

“When nothing less than the best will do, the Nike ‘Gold Digging’ Women’s T-Shirt is up to the challenge with a bold design that’s a treat on the eyes in a slim, comfortable fit,” the company wrote on its website.

But some women are calling out Nike for calling women gold diggers, as if they can be nothing more.

“What’s wrong? Well, lots of things, actually,” wrote Styleite. “For instance, does this shirt come in men’s sizes? Nope. Because gold digging is just for the ladies, of course! Come on, Nike.”

Nike is holding firm, stating that it’s not trying to disrespect anyone with the new t-shirts.

“Nike has consistently supported female athletes and the position they enjoy as positive role models,” Nike said in a statement. “The t-shirt uses a phrase in an ironic way that is relevant given it was released just as the world focused on the success of female athletes.”
